Blog //Talking the Talk: Knots

In this series we honor the contributions made on the Zooniverse Talk boards for our project, Scribes of the Cairo Geniza . Talk is a way for citizen scientists on Zooniverse to converse with one another and experts on the different material they are working on, ask questions, and explore new insights. Each week we will feature a talk conversation that we love. Thanks for the participation #genizascribes! Subject 21708023: Mosseri I.15, Genizah Research Unit, Cambridge University Library

@citsci-rancho: #drawings of knots, and perpendicular text which includes non-hebrewscript symbols (and possibly #math ) on side 1, #grid with #numerals on side 2 #magical? #asktheexperts

@ev111: Slaughtering #halachah #charakteres #code_key

@citsci-rancho: The classmark provides a lot of information on this fragment, written by the scribe Isaac b. Mivhar in 1240 CE. The text is #maimonides . #amulet

@ev111: Maybe related to subject 12506619.

@judaicadh: Nice find!

@citsci-rancho refers to the classmark notes available in the University of Cambridge Digital Library.

Leaf 1: Maimonides, Mišne Tora, Šeḥiṭa 14:11–16 followed by the Aramaic concluding formula בריך רחמנא דסיען and the scribe’s name, Isaac b. Mivḥar. F. 2r: notes in Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew, including a date, 1551 Sel. (= 1240 CE), and a name, Isaac b. Samuel; a blessing including Isaiah 40:29; two ornamental designs and a marginal note, quoting Genesis 22:10. F. 2v: amulet, including a table with Arabic numerals.

@ev111noted the same knotted ornamental design on a fragment from the collection at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Subject 12506619: ENA 2847.26, Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary
